What does the Quran say about the crucifixion of Jesus?

It is commonly held by Muslims that the crucifixion of Jesus Christ did not occur. Depending on the interpretation of the following verse, Muslim scholars have different opinions. Some believe that God gave someone Jesus' appearance, causing everyone to believe that Jesus was crucified.

It is stated in the Quran, That they said (in their boast), "We killed the Messiah Isa (Jesus) son of Maryam (Mary), The Messenger of Allah"- but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but so it was made to appear to them, and those who differ therein are full of doubts, with no (certain) knowledge, but only conjecture to follow, for of a surety They killed him not-Nay, Allah raised him up unto Himself; and Allah is Exalted in Power, Wise- Q 4:157-158.

Most Muslims believe this to mean that Jesus Christ never died but Allah made it appear to the people that he had been died. Most Muslims believe he was raised to Heaven without being put on the cross and God transformed another person to appear exactly like Jesus who was crucified instead of Jesus. This causes some serious problems that need to be addressed. If Allah tricked people into believing Jesus was died then this means that Allah started Christianity by his own deception, and He allowed Christians to be deceived. The whole foundation of the Christian faith is rested on death of Jesus. The historical reality of Jesus death is an essential of the Christian faith. Without Jesus death his resurrection becomes irrelevant, and without the resurrection Christianity itself is rendered meaningless, i.e. 1 Corinthians 15:14 "and if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is vain, your faith also is vain." According to history hundreds of thousands of Christians--men, women, and children--were tortured and killed for their faith in Christianity. This means that Allah started Christianity and allowed thousands of people to give their life for something that was all a deception.

From what I've studied, the Qur’an states that a prophet cannot lie (deceive another by implication). So, here's something that I have yet to hear apologetics on. Allah is proclaimed to be truthful in all things. Yet, many Muslims believe that Allah saved Jesus from the death of the cross and will confirm that Allah only made it look as if Jesus died.

Now, if I led a person to believe one thing, then did something else, it would be counted as deception on my part. I would have deceived a person, which causes them to believe a lie and creates a stumbling block.

If we (humans) are held to present the truth at all times, then why would Allah be permitted to deceive mankind through the faked death of Jesus on the cross? I just find this to create an inconsistency in the character represented of Allah.

It seems most incongruent with Islamic doctrine regarding the character of Allah to maintain that Allah would have either needed or chosen to resort to chicanery and mass deception in order to spare the life of Jesus.

Please look carefully at the verse. The question of "killing" is the issue. In response to the claim by the Jews that they killed Jesus, Allah's reply is that (1) he was not killed or murdered in the normal fashion (2) he was not killed by crucifixion. This negates the possibility of Jews killing Jesus in any manner whatsoever, supported by the very last sentence of the same verse: "they could not kill him for certain."  If we further say that someone else was hanged in his place, then we are really messing up everything and failing to see the true message of the Quran.

In the verse 4:157 please notice carefully, WA lakin shubbiha lahum” means "He was made to resemble to them" or "it was made to resemble to them" or "a likeness of that was made for them" or "a similitude was made for them" -- not "someone was made to resemble him".  In the sentences, "it" or "that" refers to the incident and not a person.

In fact, I don't see in Q 4:157-158 a denial of Christ's death, nor yet a denial of His crucifixion. Actually, I see a harmony between the text of that Surah, and John's gospel, when Jesus said; Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.
No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.- John 10.17-18.

The Jews always claimed that they killed the Masih, the son of Maryam (the Messiah, son of Mary). Allah is telling Muhammad that although they claimed that they killed the Masih, in reality they could not murder him nor could they kill him by crucifixion. Then again, in the very same verse, Allah is telling that they could not kill him for certain.

Two types of death are being discussed here (a) a general murder (b) killing by crucifixion.  The Jews wanted to cause either of the two types of death to Jesus. Allah assures us that they failed to cause either type of death to him. The traditional Muslim faith is that since Jesus was not murdered or killed by crucifixion, only possibility is that he is never died!!! Even if we read in Quran 5:117 Jesus says “…but when Thou didst cause me to die, Thou wert the watcher over them, and Thou art witness of all things.”  (Q. 5:117)

Also Surah 3:54 states: "When Allah said: 'O Jesus, I will cause thee to die and exalt thee in My presence and clear thee of those who disbelieve..." In so many ways that seems to corroborate with Philippians 2:8-10 which states: "And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God has highly exalted Him, and has given Him a name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of heavenly ones, and of earthly ones, and of ones under the earth; "

It is so then that Jesus was not actually killed by the Jews, but it only appeared to them that they killed Him, but in fact He laid His own life down for us on the cross. If Jesus lay down his life and died, it is still valid that the Jews could not (a) murder him or (b) kill him by any meaning.

The confusion arises because Allah said "…they (the Jews) did not crucify him...”  What is important to understand is the word "crucify" means ‘to kill by crucifixion'.   The reason the Roman's (and NOT the Jews) put a person on the cross is to kill him according to their custom.  They would not put a person on the cross and later let him go away; so, the word “crucify" has an inherent meaning of killing by crucifixion. We can read clearly this in Gal 16:14 "But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world." We read this verse in Good News Bible translation as follows. Gal 16:14 "As for me,  however, I will boast only about the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ; for by means of his cross the world is dead to me, and I am dead to the world""The cross of the Lord" means "the death of the Lord" to Paul and that's why GNB translated the word crucified as dead. Thats why he (Paul) said "the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world" means "the world is dead to me, and I am dead to the world". They would not put a person on the cross and later let him go away; so, the word “crucify" has an inherent meaning of killing by crucifixion. Killing by crucifixion was their intent, and with this intent they did put him on the cross, however, they failed to kill him because "He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross". Remember Jesus said: "No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself".

Please click here for more details on who killed Jesus and what was the cause of His death.

The Quran is not actually denying His crucifixion, nor yet His death. And to consider that He was raised up to life, and subsequently raised up to Allah, as is also in harmony with Bible (John 20.9-17; Acts 1.2-3, 9).  Please click here for more details on Jesus death from Quran.

    1. You do not provide a shred of evidence from the Quran that this article is incorrect. If you want to prove an interpretation of the Quran to be incorrect, you must provide evidence from the Quran that contradicts that interpretation. "Say: Bring your proof, if ye are truthful!" (Quran 27: 64) You only provide evidence that this article disagrees with the way most Islamic scholars interpret this verse, which is exactly the author's point. Scholars can be wrong. The only interpretation of a text that is automatically correct is the interpretation put forth by the author, or someone equal to the author. If you believe that the opinion of Yusuf Ali is absolute proof that this article is incorrect, then you are making Yusuf Ali equal to the author of the Quran. "They have taken their scholars and monks as lords besides Allah" (Quran 9:31).

    2. On perusal of Al-koran, the Jews had boasted that the Jews had killed the Christ. The killers(Jews) had themselves admitted that they had only killed the Christ. Chapter 4 verse of koran confirms that the Jews killed the prophets earlier also. In the instant case, there is no mistaken identity of Christ, as it was a planned move jointly by the Jews, Chief Priests and Roman kingdom. The close disciple of Judas Iskcariot received 30 silver coins in return of betrayal of the Christ. This is prophesised in the Bible - book Zachariah- Chapter 11 verse 12. During the last Supper, the Christ foretold the disciple without naming him. Judas was looking for an opportune time. When Jesus along with other disciples were away to the Mount of Olives/Gethsemene, it was the opportune time to betray the Christ. There arrived Judas and the Roman soldiers. Judas identifies the Christ by kissing Him and thereafter the arrest followed. As such, there is no mistaken identity. Bible says that this is the hour of glorification of the Father and the Son. The same spirit and tenor is continued in Al-koran that the Christ was neither killed nor crucified, but that follows conjectures. This brings out that this act should not be taken as killing nor crucification, but this act follows conjectures. The word except brings out exception to the killing, whereas the word conjectures bring out incomplete decision following an incident. Here, we have to go back to the sacrificial rites and rituals since the days of Ibrahim to this date, where we use the word sacrifice instead of killing, since killing is an act of violence, whereas sacrifice is for a benefit. Al-koran is in agreement with the Bible that it is not a case of killing , but a case of sacrifice. Please refer to Qeeqah in Islam , where goat is sacrificed, with chanting that the flesh, blood, etc of the goat is sacrificed in exchange for the flesh, blood of the new born child to save the child from the hell of fire /evils. The same prayer is chanted by the Christians by looking to the Christ on the sacrificial wooden cross. Thank you.

  4. As one who abhorred evil, Muhammad detested those who disobeyed the Scriptures. He was familiar with the teachings of the Jewish and Christian holy book the Bible (perhaps in reading it himself, if he was literate, or in learning of it through oral means via storytelling). He was very upset with the hypocrisy among the people: the idol worship, and anything dishonoring to God was very revolting to Him. He believed that Allah had revealed the Torah and the gospels (the Injil).
"ALLAH is HE besides Whom there is none worthy of worship, the Living, the Self-Subsisting and All-Sustaining. HE has sent down to thee the Book containing the truth and fulfilling that which precedes it; and HE has sent down the Torah (Law of Moses) and the Gospel (of Jesus) before this, as a guidance to the people; and HE has sent down the Discrimination (judgement between right and wrong)."—Qur'an, Surah 3:3-4

  5. One who was greatly respected by Muhammad was Abraham (Ibrahim), whom he called an upright and righteous man.
"Abraham was indeed a paragon of virtue, obedient to ALLAH, ever inclined to HIM, and he was not of those who set up equals with ALLAH; Ever grateful for HIS favours: HE chose him and guided him to a straight path. And WE bestowed on him good in this world, and in the Hereafter he will surely be among the righteous. And now WE have sent revelation to thee, enjoining, 'Follow the way of Abraham who was ever inclined to ALLAH and was not of those who set up equals to HIM.'"—Qur'an, Surah 16:121-124

Abraham was also looked upon as one who fulfilled God's commands:
"And remember when his Lord tried Abraham with certain commandments which he fulfilled, HE said, 'I will make thee a leader of men.' Abraham asked, 'And from among my offspring?' God said, 'MY covenant does not embrace the transgressors.'"—Qur'an, Surah 2:125

  6. Muhammad also had great understanding of the scriptures and faith in the angels who told Zechariah he would have a son (as in Luke 1:18, 57-60).
"So her Lord accepted her with gracious acceptance and caused her to grow an excellent growth and made Zachariah her guardian. Whenever Zachariah visited her in the chamber, he found with her provisions. He said, 'O Mary whence hast thou this ?' She replied, 'It is from ALLAH.' Surely ALLAH gives to whomsoever HE pleases without measure.

Then and there did Zachariah pray to his Lord, saying, 'My Lord grant me from Thyself pure offspring; surely thou art the Hearer of Prayer.'

And the angels called to him as he stood praying in the chamber, 'ALLAH gives thee glad tidings of Yahya, who shall testify to the truth of a word from ALLAH - noble and chaste and a Prophet, from among the righteous.

He said 'My Lord, how shall I have a son, when old age has overtaken me already, and my wife is barren?' He answered, 'Such is the way of ALLAH; HE does what HE pleases,'

  7. He said 'My Lord, give me a commandment.' He replied, 'The commandment for thee is that thou shalt not speak to men for three days except by signs.

And remember thy Lord much and glorify HIM in the evening and in the early morning.' And remember when the angels said, 'ALLAH has chosen thee and purified thee and chosen thee above all women of the time.

'O Mary, be obedient to thy Lord and prostrate thyself and worship the one God with those who worship HIM.'

This is of the tidings of things unseen which WE reveal to thee. And thou was not with them when they cast their arrows, as to which of them should be the guardian of Mary, nor was thou with them when they disputed with one another.

  8. When the angels said, 'O Mary, ALLAH gives thee glad tidings of a son through a word from HIM; his name shall be the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, honoured in this world and in the next, and of those who are granted nearness to God;

'And he shall speak to the people in the cradle, and when of middle age, and he shall be of the righteous.

She said, 'My Lord, how shall I have a son, when no man has touched me? He said, 'Such is the way of ALLAH. HE creates what HE pleases. When HE decrees a thing HE says to it 'Be,' and it is;"—Qur'an, Surah 3:38-48

Muhammad also speaks of the resurrection of Jesus:
"Thereupon she pointed to him. They said, 'How can we talk to one who is a child in the cradle?' Jesus said, 'I am a servant of ALLAH. HE has given me the Book, and has made me a Prophet; 'And HE has made me blessed wheresoever I may be, and has enjoined upon me Prayer and almsgiving so long as I live; 'And HE has made me dutiful towards my mother, and has not made me arrogant and graceless; 'And peace was on me the day I was born, and peace will be on me the day I shall die, and the day I shall be raised up to life again.' That was Jesus, son of Mary. This is a statement of the truth concerning which they entertain doubt."—Qur'an, Surah 19:30-35

    1. Here, the word 'O Mary, the sister of Aaron ..............' appears. This Aaron refers to the same Aaron ,the contemporary companion of Moses, the prophet. Why this name should appear now after almost 3500-4000 years. Any scripture has got an inner meaning in a figurative sense. Here, the child Jesus is born. Aaron was the Chief Priest, whereas Jesus is also the Head Priest, as per Bible - Chapter Hebrew. This resemblance is well connected and brought out here in one sentence by connecting Aaron. Jesus had taken many roles to play, as the Son of God like ourselves, Spirit of God, Christ, Word of God and in the end as a Judge on second coming. Hadith says that Jesus is returning to the world to give the right judgement, break the cross, and kill the pigs.
Here, the word 'Break the cross" does not mean the Jesus will abolish the cross and christianity, but that it has got an inner meaning that Jesus shall not be subjected to the sufferings of the cross again, that is , what mentioned herein in a figurative way and any more sufferings, pain and punishment will not exist in the new world where Jesus is going to reign. The word 'he will kill the pigs' mean , in a figurative sense, that pigs is a dirty animal and Jesus will kill the anti-Christ along with his supporters/companions who are all unclean in hearts. Thank You.

  9. In calling Jesus a messenger, Muhammad was also correct. He did not mean that Jesus was not the Messiah. Muhammad knew that one could be a messenger and not be a Messiah… but as The Messiah, one is also a messenger.

Jesus was both a messenger and The Messiah that Allah had promised! What is a Messiah? A Messiah is always known as "a Saviour… a liberator and a deliverer." God had promised to send one (Messiah) to pay the debt of sin for all mankind.

The Messiah!… God's gift to sinful man… The Saviour… The Liberator… Our Redeemer. The prophets of the Torah foretold of His coming. Muhammad and his Disciples revered Him… the Qur'an and the Bible reveal Him! The Messiah… The Saviour of the world! Neither the Qur'an nor the Bible speak of any other as being the Messiah!!!

Dear friend, that is the most profound truth! And it is truth that cannot be denied. Jesus is the one and only Messiah. He is the Saviour. He is the Messiah of the Muslims, the Jews, and the Gentiles. Millions throughout the world of every nation and creed accept Him as Saviour.

    1. Jesus is the Messiah of all...the only problem is that in Muslim belief Jesus is only a messenger and not the messiah. Islamic religion believes that Jesus is just a prophet, which unfortunately means they deny him as messiah and son of God(Allah). and the only way to God is through his son Jesus, whom believed by Muslims has yet to come.

  10. Many have followed false Messiahs and had their lives ended in death. They were sincere, but they were sincerely wrong. Had they only accepted the indisputable claim that Jesus is the Messiah, they would have found the peace that they were looking for, and the eternal life that God has promised to all who will accept Jesus as Messiah… the Saviour of the world. Yes, Isah Al Masih loves you! The Messiah that Muhammad wrote about… to forgive you and to be your Saviour… your Liberator… your Deliverer from sin. History tells us that He was crucified and died on a cross. History tells us that three days later there was an empty tomb. History, and hundreds of eye witnesses, tell us that He rose from the dead. But sadly many also reject the love and forgiveness God has offered in Jesus.

Allah has given you a free will. YOU must make a choice. You cannot be neutral.

Don't take this writer's word for it. Investigate for yourself the claims of Muhammad, the prophecies in the Torah, and the life of Jesus written in the Bible. The prophecies that were fulfilled by His birth, life, death and resurrection.

  11. Check out the reasons why Paul, the greatest persecutor of Jesus' followers, became such a strong believer in Jesus as the Messiah… and why he became the world's greatest missionary.

If you are not already a follower of Isah (Jesus), you must make a choice 1) to believe that Jesus is the Messiah OR 2) to reject Him as Saviour. You can choose to believe the Messiah, Jesus, who said He would, and did, rise from the dead. Allah gave Jesus, born miraculously through Mary (Maryam, Sura 3:45) as Muhammed agreed, to the world… for you.
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."—John 3:16

("Son of God" does not mean that God had physical relations with Mary, but rather that God willed it supernaturally that Mary would become the earthly mother of Jesus even as a virgin. See Surah 3:47-48)

Allah loves you. How could anyone want to reject such a wonderful love… reject Allah's forgiveness… His promises of eternal life? The Bible teaches how we can know where we will spend eternity.

  17. Let us compare both Qoran 4:157-158; and Qoran 19:33 which says; "So peace is on me the day I was born, the day that I die, and the day that I shall be raised up to life (again)"! The above verses that are stated in Chapter 4 Vs 157-158 deny that Jesus is not dead; where as Chapter 19v33 states that Jesus is dead and is raised again ( since Jesus forecasts what will happen to Him in the future of that time). So, the Qoran contradicts with itself & the Muslims are in confusion so far.

    2. Chapter 4 vs 157-158 denies killing/crucification, but that follows conjectures contained in the Abrahamic sacrifice of his son/goat, which is a shadow of things to come, but now fulfilled at the sacrifice(not killing) of Christ.

    2. While I am not fond of single verse quotes to begin with, as they suffer from an absence of context. However, your quotation is not an admission of the Lords, but rather the observation of a human.

A fuller context of the verse is that, long ago, God had made Israel his chosen people, but had they turned from him. In Jer 3:20, Israel is even compared to a woman who is faithless to her lover, but by 4:1, God is asking Israel to turn from their detestable things and to be faithful. Then comes the threat that if Israel doesn't open its hert to the Lord (4:4), then God will be angry and bring destruction from the north (4:6), and by 4:9, the aristocracy of the Israelites will realize that, though the chosen people, they are not above God's wrath, and in 4:10, it indicates that they will lament the fact that they were not, indeed, above God's wrath. 4:10 is the Israelites blaming God and accusing him of deception when, in reality, they had deceived themselves into believing they were above God's wrath.

In short, you have not found a biblical passage that describes God as being deceitful, but rather one describing the Israelites of the period as self-deceiving.

  20. The Qur’an (in Anglicized form: Koran ) is certainly the greatest literary work in classical Arabic and for all Muslims stands as the definitive word of God (in Arabic: Allah ) spoken to the prophet Muhammad by the angel Gabriel. When reading the Qur’an , you should realize that, for all Muslims, the text you are reading is quite literally the voice of God; because the Qur’an is the direct speech of God in Arabic, translation of the work is seen as blasphemy, as an unforgivable tampering with God’s own speech. Nevertheless, the Qur’an has been translated into Turkish and Farsi (the language of Iran) in this century and is recited in these languages in religious services in Turkey and Iran. The Muslim community tolerates this but just barely. For all practical purposes, to be Muslim, then, means almost universally to be able to read and understand classical Arabic, despite what one’s native language is [Ed. a Muslim reader noted that many Muslims do not understand the language, but they must only read or say the words correctly].
